In the Oxford dictionary a presupposition is “a thing tacitly assumed beforehand at the beginning of a line of argument or course of action. In the field of linguistics known as pragmatic, a presupposition is an implicit assumption about the world or background belief relating to an utterance whose truth is taken for granted in discourse. In layman's terms, it means something is assumed to be true, i.e. presupposed, in order for the sentence, statement, or belief to be true. These are my Reflections
If you were to think of your transitional moments as miniature battles, would you say that you’re taking, holding, or giving up ground? If we think of things from a militaristic perspective, and we focus on keeping things as simple as possible, those are really your only three options. You can take ground. You can hold the ground. Or you can give up ground.
What are the transitional moments you experience at work? As I’d highlighted in Reflections 042 and 043 transitional moments are everywhere. They occur when you first wake up in the morning and you transition from sleep to wake. They happen at meal times. They happen after meal times. They happen when you transition away from work at the end of the day, and they happen as you transition into heading off to bed.
Yesterday, I was reflecting on the transitional moments we experience throughout the day. If you took the challenge I provided in the P.S. you’ve probably realized that these moments are literally everywhere. But which of these moments are key? Which, if you will, are the key transitions that if mastered would have a dramatic difference on your day to day and maybe even your life. As I reflect on my own life I find that it falls under the Pareto Principle that 80% of the output comes from just 20% of the input.
Have you ever stopped to consider just how many transitional moments you experience throughout your day? Whether you’re transitioning from asleep to awake or from just realizing your conscious to asking yourself what you need to do after you use the restroom, or later in the day transitioning from lunch back to work, we all experience countless transitions throughout our day. Oftentimes these moments get lost in the minutia of the day and are processed through our unconscious minds as we transition from thought to thought and activity to activity. One thing I’ve been reflecting on lately is what would happen if we became more consciously aware of these moments.
Today, I read a quote from Ben Franklin that really got my wheels turning… “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, and success have no meaning.” - Ben Franklin If that’s the case, what prevents us from continual growth and progress. Is it a lack of determination and persistence? Is it a lack of clarity on the steps that need to be taken in order to grow and progress? Or, is it an overall lack of willingness to put in the work?
